1 Utamaro UTAMARO: A Chorus of Birds
New York Metropolitan Museum of Art/Viking Press 1981 0-670-22009-4 / 9780670220090 Hardcover
"The Book of Birds" was published about 1700 when the wood-block print was at its finest and the artists Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was at the height of his career. "A Chorus of Birds" reproduces in facsimile size and in the fold-out format of the original a copy of Utamaro's "Momo-chidori kyoka awase" in the collection of The Metrpolitan Musem of Art. The only difference is to accomodate the western reader and the sequence of the illustrations has been reversed, left-to-right. (Translations should be read in the order of the Japanese, right to left.) James T. Kenney's note on kyoka and his translations follow at the end of the book. Book is as new condition, encased in a tan color slipcase, which has light shelf wear and a crease on the back of the slipcase. 48 pages.
